At SL VOYO, Sri Lanka’s first travel platform, we help travellers go beyond basic sightseeing and experience the island in a more meaningful way. Whether you are joining our tours or planning your own adventure, here is our friendly guide to discovering Bambarakanda Waterfall – Sri Lanka’s tallest natural wonder.
Reaching New Heights at Bambarakanda
Sri Lanka is home to countless breathtaking waterfalls, but none reach quite as high as Bambarakanda. Standing proudly with a sheer drop of 263 meters, it is officially the tallest waterfall in the country and ranks 299th in the world.
Located deep within the Badulla district in the central highlands, this majestic waterfall is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventurous travellers. Unlike wide, rushing cascades, Bambarakanda drops gracefully as a thin, silver thread from a rocky outcrop, creating a striking contrast against the dark green mountains.
For travellers looking to escape the ordinary, a visit to this towering wonder offers a peaceful retreat into the heart of Sri Lanka’s misty hills.
A Majestic Drop Through the Highlands
The beauty of Bambarakanda lies in its unique formation and dramatic surroundings. Formed by the Uduweriya Haputale mountain and Kuda Oya-a tributary of the Walawe River-the water plunges from a staggering height down into the valley below.
Though it is not a wide waterfall, its incredible height makes it an awe-inspiring sight from afar. The surrounding landscape features lush green forests, steep cliffs, and crisp mountain air. It has also become a favourite spot for photography enthusiasts, who love capturing the stunning views of the waterfall against the dramatic highland background.
The Best Time to Witness the Peak Flow
Timing your visit can make all the difference when exploring the central highlands. The best time to visit Bambarakanda Waterfall is during the monsoon season, from May to September.
During these months, heavy rains feed the mountain streams, ensuring the water flow is at its peak power and the surrounding landscape is at its absolute greenest. The rushing water roars down the cliffside, and the misty atmosphere adds a magical touch to the entire experience.
Journey Through the Kalupahana Route
Getting to Bambarakanda is an adventure in itself. To reach the waterfall, travellers need to travel along the Balangoda – Badulla Route (A4) to Kalupahana town, a small settlement nestled between Belihul Oya and Beragala.
Look out for a small signboard that marks the turn-off towards the falls. From here, you will travel along a curvy road for about 3.5 kilometers until the waterfall becomes directly visible on your left.
Please note that this road can be quite challenging, as it is very narrow, washed away, and full of potholes. While a van with high ground clearance can make the trip, a four-wheel-drive vehicle is strongly recommended. The base of the fall is just a few hundred meters from the road, though reaching it requires navigating without a clear marked path.
Discovering the Natural Wonder
Leopards and elephants may steal the spotlight in the wildlife parks, but Sri Lanka’s waterfalls represent the tranquil, towering beauty of the island’s interior.
From its record-breaking height to the bumpy, scenic drive through Kalupahana, a trip to Bambarakanda Waterfall offers an unforgettable journey into the wild highlands. Whether you are framing the perfect shot through your camera lens or simply listening to the sound of distant rushing water, it stands as a true treasure of the island.
For travellers lucky enough to witness it, the experience becomes more than just a photo stop. It becomes a story.
At SL VOYO, we believe Sri Lanka’s natural wonders are best experienced with patience, respect, and a sense of wonder.
