At SL VOYO, Sri Lanka’s first travel platform, we help travellers go beyond basic sightseeing and experience the island in a more meaningful way. Whether you are joining our tours or planning your own adventure, here is our friendly guide to discovering Baker’s Falls – one of Horton Plains’ most famous and thunderous natural wonders.

The Roaring Cascade of Horton Plains

Baker's falls

Standing at 22 meters tall, Baker’s Falls-known locally by its Sinhala name, Gonagala Ella (ගෝනගල ඇල්ල)-is one of the most famous sights within the Horton Plains National Park.

The waterfall is renowned for the loud, thunderous roar created as the water crashes powerfully onto the massive rock formation at its base. Forming an important part of the Belihul Oya, the water cascades over a broad, dark rock face before plunging deep into a gorge, creating a dramatic and picturesque scene that captivates every hiker who visits.

The History Behind Baker's Name and Colonial Era

Like many highland landmarks, Baker’s Falls carries a distinct piece of colonial history. The waterfall is named after Sir Samuel Baker, the famous British explorer who discovered it back in 1845.

During the British colonial era, the Horton Plains were vastly different and teemed with wild animals such as elephants, buffaloes, elk, and leopards. Sir Samuel Baker himself is remembered in history-though controversially-for his extensive hunting exploits across these very plains before the area was declared a protected national park.

Lush Vegetation and Dramatic Surroundings

The journey to Baker’s Falls takes visitors through some of the most unique and pristine high-altitude ecosystems on the island. The surrounding landscape is enveloped in lush vegetation, featuring towering giant ferns, sparkling mosses, and vibrant rhododendron bushes that burst into color during their blooming season.

The cool, misty climate of Horton Plains gives the entire area an enchanted, otherworldly atmosphere, making it a dream destination for nature photography and peaceful exploration.

Safety Warning at the Plunge Pool

While Baker’s Falls is a stunning sight to behold, it also comes with important safety reminders. Despite repeated warnings-which are sometimes unfortunately ignored or removed by overconfident visitors-the 12-meter plunge pool directly beneath the falls is extremely dangerous.

Due to powerful undercurrents and hidden underwater hazards, the pool has proven deadly and has claimed numerous lives over the years. Visitors are strongly advised to admire the waterfall from the safety of the designated viewing platforms rather than attempting to swim.
