Whether you are joining our tours or planning your own adventure, here is our friendly guide to discovering Ravana Falls – one of Ella’s most famous and vibrant natural attractions.

The Iconic Roadside Wonder of Ella

Ravana waterfalls

Sri Lanka’s hill country is world-renowned for its stunning cascades, and Ravana Falls sits right at the top of the must-visit list. Located just 6 kilometers away from the Ella Railway Station and nestled within the Ravana Ella Wildlife Sanctuary, this waterfall is one of the most accessible and popular stops on any southern highland tour.

Standing at approximately 25 meters (82 feet) high, it currently ranks as one of the widest waterfalls in the country. Water cascades gracefully from an oval-shaped concave rock outcrop, creating an impressive and inviting sight right by the main roadway.

Legends of King Ravana and Princess Sita

Beyond its scenic roadside appeal, Ravana Falls is wrapped in ancient mythology and legendary tales. The waterfall is named after the legendary King Ravana, connected directly to the famous Indian epic, the Ramayana.

According to legend, King Ravana kidnapped Princess Sita and hid her in the deep caves behind the waterfall, which are now known as the Ravana Ella Cave. At the time, the cave was surrounded by thick wilderness and dense forests. It is also believed that Queen Sita bathed in a tranquil pool fed by the falling water, adding a deep sense of historical mystery to the site.

The Unique Shape and Seasonal Flow

The visual character of Ravana Falls changes dramatically depending on when you visit. During the local wet season, the rushing water transforms the cascade into a shape that resembles an areca flower with withering petals, spreading wide across the rock face.

However, during the dry season, the volume of water reduces quite dramatically. For the most dramatic and powerful sightseeing experience, visiting after periods of rain showcases the waterfall at its fullest and most vibrant state.

Swimming and Exploring the Rocks

Ravana falls

For travellers wondering where to enjoy a refreshing splash in Ella, Ravana Falls is the ultimate spot. The falls invite visitors to climb over the lower rocks and get a closer look at the cascading water.

You can spend some wonderful hours swimming in the natural rock pools and enjoying the cool water. However, visitors should always exercise caution and stay safe, as the wet rocks can be quite slippery. For a more peaceful experience, try visiting during quieter hours of the day.
