At SL VOYO, Sri Lanka’s first travel platform, we help travellers discover Sri Lanka through experiences that go beyond basic sightseeing. Whether you are joining our tours or planning your own journey, this is your friendly guide to the Top 10 Beaches in Sri Lanka.
As the SL VOYO Founder, I have been fortunate enough to travel almost everywhere in Sri Lanka (only mannar I haven’t been). To be honest, I have been to places even a normal Sri Lankan cannot go. After starting in tourism, I travelled to many amazing places so that I could share and have my own experience. This list is completely ranked based on how I feel about each destination and how my foreign partners felt during these visits.
Sri Lankan beaches are literally some of the best in the world, maybe because it is an island. Personally, I feel that especially in the south, you get to see sunsets where the sun has a distinct red-orange colour. The east coast beaches are beautiful because of the sand colour and the way the water reflects light. And this comes from someone who has seen Maya Bay in Thailand!
Let’s see Top Ten.
1. Mirissa (South Beach)
Mirissa is everyone’s favourite, and we all know why. Let me explain. This is one of the few places where all the restaurants are located right on the beach sand itself. In the morning, you can go to any restaurant, and if you buy a cocktail, beer, or food, you get a sunbed for free. It’s always better to order food instead of paying around 1500 LKR per sunbed. Try to come early, otherwise the sunbeds can be fully taken. On the other hand, you can walk towards the corners of the beach where you will find more chilled and relaxed restaurants with fewer tourists.
You can enjoy the sun, learn to surf, and also climb Parrot Rock, which is a small rock on the left side of the beach (also seen in the video). In the evening, you can walk along the beach or the road and head to Coconut Tree Hill, which is around a 30 to 40 minute walk, to watch the sunset. It is one of the most famous sunset spots in Sri Lanka.
At night in Mirissa, there are parties for tourists every day. Each restaurant hosts a party on a specific day of the week. You can easily notice which restaurant is hosting by the fireworks at night, or you can just ask a local beach boy. If you know which restaurant is hosting, it’s better to book a table there and have dinner. Otherwise, after 10 PM, they remove the tables and chairs, and it turns into a party. If you are coming from outside, you will need to buy a cocktail to enter, and there will be no food available after 10 PM.
There are almost no locals here since it is a highly touristic area. On other days, you can go whale watching in the morning or do a Nilwala crocodile safari in the afternoon, both of which we organize.
The reason I feel this is the best beach is because you get everything you want as a tourist, along with a beautiful beach. Every time we pass Mirissa, we stay for at least two days, once we even stayed for a full week. It’s a place where you can relax but also find adventure if you want. Personally, I feel it’s one of the best places for couples, as it creates a perfect setting for emotions and special moments, making it ideal for romantic escapes and honeymoon trips.
Just remember, Mirissa can be expensive, from food to hotels, so make sure to book in advance. If it’s the best in Sri Lanka, of course it’s going to be full!
Best Resturant in Mirissa
- Shady Lane Mirissa – (Smoothie bowls & brunch)
- Dewmini Roti Shop – (Kottu & Sri Lankan roti)
- Zephyr Restaurant & Bar – (Seafood & cocktails)
- Salt Mirissa – (Seafood & beach dining experience)
- The Slow Mirissa – (Healthy food & coffee)
- DelTano’s Wood Fired Pizza & Pasta – (Wood-fired pizza)
Marble Beach (East North Beach)
You have to travel about 20 minutes from Trincomalee to reach Marble Beach. The beach is well maintained as it is managed by the Air Force resort. To enter, you have to pay a small fee of around 500 LKR.
The beach is isolated, extremely beautiful, and very peaceful. It is divided into two parts—one managed by the army and the other open to the public. We recommend going to the Air Force side, where you can order food from the restaurant and enjoy sunbeds as well. Recently, from 2026, you can even book and stay inside Marble Beach through their own resorts.
The sea here is completely blue, with no rocks at all, and the depth stays almost the same for a few meters. Now they have added a safety line to show the maximum safe area, and there is also a lifeguard on duty. It is one of the best beaches to completely relax, with almost no noise around.
Try to avoid weekends, as school groups often visit in the evenings, which can make the place crowded and a bit messy (as seen in the video).
This beach is highly recommended for family trips, and you can also ask the navy in advance for snorkeling lessons.
Uchchimuni Beach
This is a personal favorite. From Kalpitiya, you have to go off-road for about 40 minutes (20km) to reach the beach. It’s an amazing and adventurous ride through sandy tracks. There is also a unique spot where you can see waves coming from both sides of the beach.
There are no shops at all, so you have to bring your own food, cooking items, and everything you need. If you are staying overnight, you will have to camp here. The water is very calm with almost no waves, making it perfect for relaxing.
You can also see the Indian islands and Mannar Island from here, which makes the experience even more special.
This place is highly recommended for young groups who enjoy adventure and camping.
Peanut Farm Beach
This beach is located near Arugam Bay, around 15 minutes away. You can take a tuk tuk, which will cost you around 3500 LKR for pick-up and drop-off.
The main reason surfers come here is because it is a secluded place to learn surfing. The waves are good, and it’s less crowded compared to Arugam Bay, so it’s perfect for beginners.
There is only one restaurant available here, so don’t expect many options for food.
We personally went there not just for surfing, but to enjoy the natural beauty of the beach and to watch tourists surfing in our country, which was a really nice experience. It’s a calm and peaceful place, ideal if you want to escape the busy main beach and enjoy something more quiet.
You can also combine this trip with Elephant Rock, which is nearby. There is another surfing spot there which is even more secluded. In the afternoon, you can climb the rock and watch a stunning sunset from the top. And yes, it’s true, elephants do come near the rock, and in the nearby lagoon there are crocodiles as well, which makes the whole experience even more unique and adventurous.
Hiriketiya Beach
Hiriketiya Beach is one of the most unique beaches in Sri Lanka, located near Dickwella. It has a small bay-like shape, which makes it very safe and perfect for relaxing.
This is one of the best places for beginner surfers. The waves are consistent but not too strong, so many tourists come here to learn surfing. There are plenty of surf schools around the beach, and you can easily rent boards or take lessons.
One of the best things about Hiriketiya is the vibe. There are small van-style restaurants and cafes right on the beach, giving it a very chilled and trendy atmosphere. You can sit, have a drink, enjoy good food, and just watch people surfing all day.
The beach is clean, the water is clear, and it’s not too crowded compared to places like Mirissa. It’s a perfect mix of relaxing and social vibes. You can spend the whole day here swimming, surfing, eating, and just enjoying the peaceful environment.
Also, around 20 minutes from Hiriketiya, you can visit Blue Beach, which is another hidden spot with very clear water and fewer crowds, perfect if you want something even more quiet.

Arugam Bay
Arugam Bay is world-famous among surfers, especially beginners, and is located on the eastern side of Sri Lanka. It requires a long drive from Colombo or the international airport, but the journey is definitely worth it.
The surf season in Arugam Bay runs from May to October, and many surfers stay here for weeks or even months, enjoying the waves and the relaxed beach lifestyle. There are many surf schools available, so it is very easy to find instructors and rent surfboards along the beach.
The sunrise here is beautiful, so we recommend waking up early, walking along the beach, and enjoying the peaceful morning atmosphere. Once you feel tired, you can head to the main road and relax at one of the many cafés nearby.
Most surfers who stay in Arugam Bay also visit Kumana National Park for a safari experience, which is one of the best places to spot leopards. This is one of our most popular experiences and can easily be added to your stay.
You can also explore nearby places like Elephant Rock, which is another surf spot where you can climb the rock and enjoy a stunning sunset. Peanut Farm Beach is also close by and is known for its natural beauty and peaceful environment.

Unawatuna
Unawatuna is one of the most popular beaches in Sri Lanka, located near Galle on the southern coast. It is very easy to reach and is one of the first beach stops for many tourists coming from Colombo.
The beach is perfect for swimming because the water is usually calm and safe. It has a curved bay shape, which protects it from strong waves, making it ideal for families and people who just want to relax in the water.
Unawatuna has a very lively vibe with many restaurants, bars, and cafés located right on the beach. During the day, you can relax on a sunbed, swim, or try snorkeling to see small fish and coral.
In the evening, the whole area becomes more active with music, beachside dining, and a great atmosphere. At night, the streets leading to the beach are fully lit up, and the beach road is filled with many restaurants, making it a very lively and enjoyable place to walk around and explore.
You can also visit nearby places like Jungle Beach, which is a more hidden and quiet spot, and the famous Galle Fort, which is only about 10 to 15 minutes away and perfect for walking, shopping, and sunset views.

Uppuveli Beach
Uppuveli Beach is a charming and lively beach near Trincomalee, perfect for travellers who want both relaxation and a bit of adventure. Even though it is smaller compared to other beaches, the peaceful atmosphere, soft sand, and clear blue water make it a great place to unwind and enjoy the east coast of Sri Lanka.
The sea is usually calm, so you can swim safely, take long walks along the beach, or just sit and enjoy the sea breeze. For those who like adventure, there are options like snorkelling and deep-sea diving, where you can explore underwater shipwrecks from ancient times, which is a very unique experience.
The sunset here is also beautiful and adds a special feeling to the place, making it perfect to spend time with friends and family.
The best time to visit Uppuveli Beach is from May to September, when the weather is sunny and the sea is calm. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to visit, as the weather is cooler and the views are even better. A visit to Uppuveli is not just a beach trip, it’s a full seaside experience.
Where to Eat
- Fernando’s Beach Bar – (Mixed cuisine – sushi, burgers, pizza & Mexican)
Fernando’s Bar is like a beachside food court with many restaurants in one place. If you come from the main road, you will find a long stretch of restaurants with plenty of options. If you come from the beach side, you will directly reach Fernando’s Bar. It’s one of the best places to try different types of food in one location.
SL VOYO Note:
According to our experience and many travellers across Sri Lanka, Trincomalee is one of the more expensive areas compared to other regions. Food can be a bit costly, but the experience and quality usually make it worth it.
Nilaveli Beach
Nilaveli Beach is one of the most stunning and peaceful beaches on the east coast near Trincomalee, perfect for anyone looking to relax and unwind. These coastal areas almost feel like private beaches, very isolated and untouched, with a long stretch of golden sand and clear blue water extending for more than a kilometre. It’s a place where you can enjoy long walks, gentle sea breeze, and truly connect with Sri Lanka’s natural beauty.
The beach is very clean, the sea is calm, and the area is known for its rich marine life, making it one of the top coastal destinations attracting travellers from around the world.
You can swim in shallow waters, walk along the soft sand, or just relax and enjoy the peaceful environment. From here, you can also visit Pigeon Island and Angel Rock. For those who like adventure, there are activities like snorkelling, scuba diving, and even fishing, giving you a complete beach experience.
The best time to visit Nilaveli Beach is from May to September, when the weather is sunny and the sea is calm. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to visit, with cooler temperatures and beautiful coastal views.
Nilaveli is perfect if you want a quiet, clean, and less crowded beach experience compared to other tourist areas in Sri Lanka.
Browns Beach
Browns Beach is one of the most easily accessible beaches in Sri Lanka, located in Negombo, very close to the airport. In fact, this is usually the first beach you might see when you arrive in Sri Lanka, even from the airplane before landing.
It is a simple and relaxed beach, perfect for your first or last day in Sri Lanka. Since it is close to many hotels and the airport, most travellers stay here when they arrive or before they leave the country.
The beach has a calm and local vibe, with many small restaurants, cafes, and hotels along the beach road. You can take a walk, enjoy the sunset, or just sit and relax after a long flight.
Even though it is not as clear or blue as the southern or eastern beaches, it still has its own charm. It’s more about convenience and experience rather than adventure.
In the evening, the beach becomes more lively with locals and tourists walking around, street food, and small beachside activities. It’s a nice place to experience a more local side of Sri Lanka before heading to other destinations.
This beach is recommended for short stays, especially if you want something close to the airport, easy to access, and a simple introduction to Sri Lanka’s coastal life.
