The Little Niagara of the Tea Gardens

Sri Lanka’s central highlands are filled with breathtaking cascades, but few capture the imagination quite like St. Clair’s Waterfall. Most conveniently seen by travellers along the Hatton – Talawakelle Road, this magnificent attraction is celebrated as one of the widest waterfalls in the entire country.

Surrounded by endless waves of lush green tea gardens, the waterfall carries a massive volume of water, earning it the beloved local nickname of the “Little Niagara of Sri Lanka.” For travellers exploring the hill country, it offers a picture-perfect stop filled with cool mountain air and incredible scenery.

The Magnificent Twin Waterfalls of St. Clair's

The unique beauty of St. Clair’s comes from its dramatic structure. The water cascades gracefully over three distinct rock outcrops before plunging deep into a massive pool below.

Because of its massive width and roaring water flow, it creates a striking visual contrast against the dark green tea plantations that blanket the slopes. Whether viewed from a distance or up close, the sight and sound of the water rushing down the rocks provide an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts alike.

Journey Through the Green Tea Bushes

While the waterfall can be admired from the main road, getting closer to it is an adventure on its own. The main fall is situated over 500 meters away from the highway, and visitors need to walk down among the tea bushes along a steep gradient to reach it.

Wandering down the winding paths through the fragrant tea leaves allows travellers to immerse themselves fully in the plantation lifestyle of the central highlands while making their way toward the roaring cascade.

Discovering the Hidden Kuda Ella

The adventure does not end with the main fall. Downstream from St. Clair’s lies a second, smaller waterfall known as Kuda Ella, which stands at an impressive height of 50 meters.

Kuda Ella is best visible at the road curve near the 90-kilometer post. From this scenic vantage point-though a bit far away-visitors can catch a complete and unobstructed view of St. Clair’s as well, including the lower section that is sometimes partially hidden from other angles.
