Located around 20 kilometres north of Matale, between Matale and Dambulla, Nalanda Gedige stands quietly among the greenery of central Sri Lanka.
For centuries, the area was believed to represent the geographical centre of the island. The location was also associated with ancient observations of the sun and the measurement of time.
Today, a peaceful tree-lined pathway leads visitors towards the ancient structure. Surrounded by forest and away from the crowds of Sri Lanka’s more famous attractions, the setting gives Nalanda Gedige a special atmosphere.
It feels less like arriving at a major tourist attraction and more like discovering something that has been hidden in the landscape for centuries.
What makes Nalanda Gedige particularly fascinating is its unusual combination of Hindu and Buddhist influences.
The monument is believed to date between approximately the 7th and 10th centuries, a period when cultural and artistic influences travelled between Sri Lanka and the Indian subcontinent.
The structure contains Buddhist elements alongside Hindu sculptures and architectural features. Stone carvings, guardian figures and religious imagery can still be seen throughout the monument.
This unusual combination has made Nalanda Gedige an important example of how different religious and artistic traditions could exist side by side.
Even today, historians cannot say with complete certainty who built the temple or exactly what its original purpose was.
That mystery is part of what makes Nalanda Gedige so intriguing.

Nalanda Gedige’s story did not end with its construction.
In the 20th century, the ancient monument faced a serious threat from the development of a nearby reservoir. Archaeologists and engineers decided that the temple needed to be moved to protect it.
The task was extraordinary.
The individual stones, bricks and other parts of the monument were carefully recorded, numbered and dismantled. They were then transported and reconstructed at a safer location.
The painstaking restoration was completed in 1985.
The project has often been compared with the relocation of the famous Abu Simbel temples in Egypt. While Nalanda Gedige is much smaller, both projects demonstrate the remarkable lengths taken to protect ancient monuments from rising water.
Today, visitors are able to walk through the reconstructed temple because of this enormous conservation effort.
Like many ancient sites in Sri Lanka, Nalanda Gedige is surrounded by stories and legends.
Some traditions connect the monument with the Ramayana and the legendary king Ravana, while other interpretations associate some of its sculptures with Hindu deities and ancient beliefs.
It is difficult to separate historical evidence from stories that developed around the monument over generations.
But perhaps that is what makes Nalanda Gedige so captivating.
You can look at the ancient stones from an archaeological perspective, appreciate them as works of art, or simply stand among them and imagine the people who built and worshipped here more than a thousand years ago.
Nalanda Gedige may not have the fame of Sigiriya or Dambulla Cave Temple, but that is exactly why it can be such a rewarding stop for curious travellers.
It offers history without the crowds, architecture surrounded by nature, and a fascinating story of different cultures coming together.
