International peace walks Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is hosting the Walk for Peace 2026, a meaningful spiritual journey that promotes unity, compassion, and non-violence.
Held from April 21 to April 28, this international pilgrimage brings together monks from Sri Lanka and overseas, along with thousands of devotees. With full state support, the event highlights Sri Lanka’s deep Buddhist heritage and cultural identity.
How the Walk for Peace Began
The Walk for Peace began as a real journey across the United States.
It was led by Venerable Pannakara Thero, who completed a 110-day walk across 10 states, from Texas to Washington. This journey gained global attention and inspired a wider movement focused on peace through action.
Why it became impactful:
- A real long-distance walking journey
- Connected people from different communities
- Shared a clear message of non-violence
- Inspired international participation
This success led to bringing the peace walk to Sri Lanka.
Government Support and Planning
Before the event, a key discussion was held at the Presidential Secretariat to organize the programme under state patronage.
The meeting was chaired by Venerable Dr. Melpitiye Wimalakitthi Thero and attended by Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, along with monks who completed the U.S. peace walk.
Key arrangements include:
- Full state patronage
- Coordination with ministries and institutions
- Alms and refreshments for monks
- Sanitation and public facilities
- Security arrangements
The Clean Sri Lanka Programme also supports the event to ensure proper organization.

The Journey Begins from Dambulla
