Discover Sri Lanka: Sigiriya

A Tourist’s Journey to Sigiriya

As I first laid eyes upon the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya, it was not hard to imagine why the site was chosen by a king as a place of refuge and royal residence over 1,500 years ago. The majestic rock, standing tall amidst the rolling greenery of central Sri Lanka, exudes a sense of timeless majesty and intrigue. “This is a lovely place,” I thought, echoing what must have been in the mind of King Kashyapa when he first envisioned his fortress in the sky.

Sigiriya Rock is located in the Matale District in the Central Province of Sri Lanka.

The Royal Vision

It’s said that King Kashyapa, during his reign from 477 to 495 AD, sought not only a secure residence but a heavenly abode fit for a king. As I climbed the steep steps carved into the rock, passing by the Mirror Wall adorned with ancient graffiti, it was as if I was walking through the very thoughts of the king himself. He envisioned a grand palace at the summit, surrounded by gardens, reservoirs, and intricate frescoes, which once covered most of the western face of the rock. The layout and architecture speak volumes about the ingenuity and creativity of the era.

Dating back to the 5th century, it was once polished so finely that the king could see his reflection as he walked by.

The Frescoes and the Mirror Wall

Halfway up the rock, I was mesmerized by the remaining frescoes, vibrant with colors and depicting celestial maidens. This artistic marvel not only showcases the aesthetic sense of the time but also reflects the king’s desire to surround himself with beauty and artistry. The Mirror Wall, once polished to perfection, allowed the king to see himself as he walked past. Today, it bears witness to the thoughts of many ancient visitors, their writings still visible, echoing admiration and wonder.

The Sigiriya Frescoes are ancient paintings on Sigiriya Rock, regarded as one of Sri Lanka’s most valuable cultural treasures.

The Gardens

As I ascended further, the view of the water gardens from above was breathtaking. The symmetry and precision of the layout are extraordinary, featuring sophisticated hydraulics still functioning after centuries. These gardens are believed to be among the oldest landscaped gardens in the world. Walking through them, I could feel the serenity and the strategic genius of creating such tranquillity in a fortress.

The gardens of Sigiriya showcase ancient urban planning and engineering with their symmetrical and asymmetrical designs, interconnected pools, fountains, and functioning watercourses during the rainy season.

The Summit Experience

Reaching the summit of Sigiriya was a transformative experience. The panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes are nothing short of royal. Standing atop, it’s easy to see why the king chose this site: the commanding views served both strategic defence and provided a heavenly panorama that could calm any weary spirit. Here, at the top, the ruins of the palace remain, a testament to the grandeur that once existed.
